Using Monitoring Relays for Emergency Lighting Systems

In today’s post on the Aim Dynamics blog, we’re looking at an application of TELE Haase voltage relays in facility management.

Emergency lighting systems must be activated when the lights fail in public buildings, such as schools or hospitals, due to under-voltage. To achieve this, a voltage relay can monitor the 3 phases of the supply voltage in the switch cabinet.
The voltage relay senses when the voltage level falls below the set threshold of 85% of the nominal voltage in one of the 3 phases. This triggers an installation contact to switch on the emergency lights.
When the supply voltage returns to the nominal level, the voltage relay will switch the emergency lights off. This is implemented with a delayed-action timing relay. The relay will then switch normal lighting system back on.
